Musculoskeletal complaints during pregnancy

Pregnancy causes many physical changes to your body which affect movement and posture. As your baby grows, a forward shift in centre of gravity leads to greater strain on your spine, muscles and ligaments. In addition, there are many hormonal changes that occur, including an increase in the production of oestrogen and progesterone. The increase in these hormones causes laxity of the ligaments resulting in hypermobile joints and a greater risk of musculoskeletal pain and injury during this time.

The most common musculoskeletal complaints during pregnancy are:

Low back pain

Neck pain

Hip pain

Pelvic and sacroiliac joint pain

Carpal tunnel syndrome

Round ligament pain

Rectus diastasis (abdominal separation)
